“A star is born: Carolina López Moreno brings Puccini’s Magda vividly to life in LSO’s
La rondine,” was the title of a review that appeared in *Seen and Heard International* in December 2024 after her London debut as Magda in
La rondine under the baton of Antonio Pappano. With this celebrated performance, the Bolivian-Albanian soprano, born and raised in Germany, established herself as one of the most exciting voices in opera today.
Carolina López Moreno is regarded as one of the most promising sopranos of her generation. On the brink of an international career, she has already collaborated with renowned orchestras and conductors, including the London Symphony Orchestra under Sir Antonio Pappano and Zubin Mehta. Notable recent performances include her portrayal of Magda in
La rondine in London, Cio-Cio-San in
Madama Butterfly under Daniele Gatti in Florence, and Leonora in
Il Trovatore under Zubin Mehta.
Since her operatic debut as Liù in Puccini’s
Turandot in 2021, López Moreno has focused on the Italian repertoire, especially Puccini’s works, whose emotional depth and human tragedies she interprets with exceptional intensity and authenticity. Her portrayals of Cio-Cio-San (Madama Butterfly), Mimì (La Bohème), and Magda (La rondine) have taken her to renowned venues such as Teatro San Carlo di Napoli, Teatro Regio di Torino, Festival Puccini Torre del Lago, and Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.
In addition to Puccini, López Moreno has excelled in other key roles of the Italian and French repertoire, including Adriana Lecouvreur (Adriana Lecouvreur) at Opéra Royal de Wallonie, Alice Ford in Verdi’s
Falstaff, Violetta Valéry (La Traviata), Leonora
(Il Trovatore), Nedda (Pagliacci), and Antonia (The Tales of Hoffmann).
Her discography includes the CD Il bel sogno (2018), a collection of arias by Charpentier, Puccini, Verdi, Gounod, Mozart, Britten, Previn, Lehár, and Stolz, recorded with Doriana Tchakarova on piano. In 2023, she released a recording of Pietro Mascagni’s
Cavalleria Rusticana
in its original version, performing as Santuzza, accompanied by the Balthasar Neumann Choir and Orchestra under the baton of Thomas Hengelbrock.
A significant artistic collaboration connects López Moreno with her Maestra, the renowned soprano Donata D’Annunzio Lombardi, whose guidance has been pivotal in her vocal and interpretative development.
Her voice combines technical precision with emotional depth, captivating both audiences and critics with her commanding stage presence and moving interpretations.
Upcoming engagements include
La Traviata at Teatro Carlo Felice and other exciting projects where she will continue to showcase her distinctive blend of vocal brilliance, technical precision, and emotional authenticity.
Carolina López Moreno, a beautiful stage presence with an equally beautiful timbre, scored a success as Mariuccia. Her sound has an expressive top voice and a velvety middle; her forte singing,
especially in the duets, was breathtaking.
